THE UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE BUTRIN MICROCOSM OF THE MEDITERRANEAN
The ancient ruins of Butrint, the first Albanian UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992, is located 18 Kilometers south of Saranda. Butrint is famous for its size, space, beauty, and uniqueness, embedded in an unspoiled landscape. Fantastic natural surroundings are part of a 29 km² national park. The ruins come from different eras and extend over 2500 years. Take yourself at least two hours to explore the area.

Stops at: The National Park of Butrint, Butrint Albania

The National Park of Butrint is very attractive to tourists because of its value. The offshore islands at Butrint sightsee are a wonderful oasis of seascape and landscape with typical Mediterranean vegetation. Underwater we encounter a very rich flora and fauna, whereby we find Phanerogam (Halophylastipulacea) and mussel (Pinnanobilis). Its mandate includes the protection of the lake and lagoon of Butrint, the natural channel of Vivari, the islands of Ksamil and as well the archaeological site, that provides valuable remains of ancient civilizations. With its ancient city of Butrint, which is a UNESCO site, the park is a very attractive area for long walks and discovering the flora and fauna there as well as some rare (harmless) reptile species. It is the best-organized park in our country.

Stops at: The history of Butrint

Settled in the 6th century BC Although the place had long been populated, Greeks from Corfu in the 6th century BC were settled on the hill in Butrint (Buthrotum). Within a century ago Butrint became a fortified trading town. Butrint's prosperity continued throughout the Roman period and that Byzantines made it a Christian center. The city then went into a long decline and was abandoned until 1927 when Italian archaeologists arrived. These days it is protected by Butrint Foundation of Lord Rothschild in the UK.

Stops at: Greek theater, Butrint Albania

The theater was used in Roman times and offers space for approx. 2500 people. The little ones are nearby
public baths in geometric mosaics under a layer of mesh and sand are buried to protect them from the weather. Deep in the forest is a wall covered with fresh Greek inscriptions and the Paleo-Christian baptismal church from the 6th century decorated with colorful mosaics of animals and birds.

In addition, you will find the impressive arches of a 6th-century basilica built over many years. A massive one Cyclopean wall from the 4th century BC. There is a drawing of a lion above a gate killing a bull, symbolic of a protective power that defeats attackers.

Stop at: Informative museum, Butrint Albania

The Acropolis was once on the top of the hill. You will find there a castle which now
is used as an informative museum. The view from the courtyard of the museum gives you a good one
Overview of the city's location and you can see the Vivari Canal connecting Lake Butrint with the
Strait of Corfu. In the gates, there are community stands where you can buy souvenirs.

Stop at: Syri Kaltër (The blue eye)

This place is in the middle of nowhere in southern Albania. There is no bus stop. They take this route all the time from the main road and assume that you may not be in the right place. At the end of a small street, you will find a unique natural spectacle. The blue eye is the hike you will find the clearest and bluest water you've ever seen. A source of cold water of unknown depth and incredible colors in the shape of a blue eye surrounded by lush plants. Enjoy this natural spectacle, bathe in the cold spring and take photos. The memory of this special creation of nature will flatter your physical needs.
