Overview

Our journey to the well-preserved Ottoman town stars from Nënë Tereza Square in Tirana. The road will last approximately 4 hours.

So we will leave early in the morning to enjoy the day later in Gjirokastra.

Itinerary

Cold War Tunnel

The first thing we will see when we arrive in Gjirokastra is the Cold War Tunnel, built in the late 1960 after the collapse of the relations with the Soviet Union.

The tunnel is long 1.5 km and there are 80 rooms, water deposits etc. The tunnel leads us to the Castle of Gjirokastra, which was built in a strategic location, where in it’s possible to see clearly the entire valley of Drin.

Army Museum

Another great point of interest in the city is the Army Museum, where as well as a vast member of riffles and machines it’s possible to visit the cell’s where political prisoners were kept between 1929-1968.

Skenduli’s House

Then our adventure continues to the Skenduli’s House, a typical example of a ’18/’19 Ottoman House which has been described as a rear and beautiful example of domestic architecture.

We will still follow the path of history and visit the Ethnographic Museum which was built up on the site of the communist dictator Enver Hoxha’s birth house.

Zekate House

Last but not least of importance, we’ll visit the Zekate House, built in 1811-1812 as a gift from Ali Pasha for his most trusted friend, with two twin towers and a large double archway. It has earned the reputation of the largest Ottoman style house in Gjirokastra.
